I am Ted Carson, and I have been involved in competitive swimming since 1965, both as a swimmer and primarily as a coach. I started swimming at the YMCA in Wichita Falls, Texas when I was around 11 years old. Soon after, the Wichita Falls Aquatic Club was formed, and I became a member of that team for the remainder of my swimming career.
Since the age of 16, I have been teaching swimming lessons at the local country club. In the fall of 1972, I began coaching an 8 & under beginner team for WFAC, and I continued doing so throughout my college years in Wichita Falls.
After graduating from college in 1976, I was offered a job in Moore, Oklahoma, as the head swim coach for Moore High School. It was a new program that I initiated from scratch. I developed an age group team alongside the high school team and, in 1980, I was honored with the title of Oklahoma High School Swim Coach of the Year.
Following my time in Moore, Oklahoma, my family and I relocated to Abilene, Texas, where I started another age group team called United Swimmers of Abilene. Within a year, the program grew to approximately 120 swimmers.
Midland Texas was my next stop in my coaching career. I moved to Midland to be the Head Age Group Coach for the City of Midland Swim Team. Two years later I was named the Head Coach for Midland High School and Midland Lee High School. Then in 1995 I also served as the Head Coach for COM until I left in 2007.
In August of 2007, I moved to Plano Texas as Head Age Group Coach for the City of Plano Swimmers. I served in that position until 2011 when I was made Head Coach/CEO of the City of Plano Swimmers. I am still currently in that position. COPS has 310 competitive swimmers, 290 pre-competitive swimmers, and about 65 Masters swimmers.
